Figure: Last Scene Ryuk (Death Note)

This is the first in a series of posts highlighting some of my collection of anime merchandise. Compared to many anime fans my collection is quite small, but I’m more than happy with its progression. As well as showing you what I have, I’ll provide some comments to serve as a sort of buyer’s guide for any collectors. I hope you might find these entries enjoyable and/or useful! To kick things off, here’s a great PVC figure of Ryuk from Death Note.

Ryuk, posed in his final act from the series.

I picked this up in Japan this March after a little deliberation (the large box size was a small concern) and I’m really glad I did. Standing at about 21cm, it’s a nice size and creators Jun Planning made the most of it with nice texturing and some great fine details like Ryuk’s belt and jewellery. The sculpt and paint work are really great; as with most figures there might be variation from one item to the next but there’s little to complain about. The ladder at the base of the figure is a little wonky-looking, but it detracts little from the overall image. Other than that, there’s really not much bad to say. This is an excellent recreation of Ryuk’s final scene, from the detail on the shinigami himself  right down to the shape of the base.

Despite being released in January 2009 – or perhaps because of that – it seems to be somewhat difficult to track down online, though I’d highly recommend this figure if you can find it. Jun Planning’s Last Scene series also includes figures of Rem, Light Yagami and Misa Amane. Sadly there doesn’t seem to be an L in this particular set, but if anyone can correct me on that I’d love to hear it.

The figure's pose is incredibly faithful to its source.

This shouldn't be a spoiler... unless you can read kanji!

Ryuk's accessories, like the skulls on his belt, are finely detailed.

L isn’t in the last scene, hence it would follow that he’s not in the collection? Looks cool though.

ryuk is so cool, n cute ^_^

That would seem like the logical reason, but Rem isn’t in the last scene either. I think the “last scene” title is intended to mean “last scene that character is in”. I just hope Jun Planning releases an L figure of similar quality to this.
